OCTOBER IS NATIONAL SENSORY AWARENESS MONTH October 30, 2009

October is dedicated to raising awareness of Sensory Processing Disorder.  The Occupational Therapists at The Pediatric Place are dedicated to working with families who have children with sensory processing disorders.   

Signs and Symptoms of Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)

  • Hypersensitivity To Touch (Over-Responsive)
  • Hyposensitivity To Touch (Under-Responsive)
  • Poor Tactile Perception And Discrimination
  • Hypersensitivity To Movement (Over-Responsive): (avoids the playground)
  • Hyposensitivity To Movement (Under-Responsive): (in constant movement)
  • Poor muscle tone/ or coordination
  • Seeks out jumping, bumping, and crashing
  • Written work is messy and often rips the paper when erasing
  • Distracted by sounds not normally noticed by others
  • Does not respond to name or verbal cues being called
  • Picky eater
  • Lick, taste, or chew inedible objects
  • Bothered by smells (foods, odors, etc.)
  • Sensitive to bright lights
  • Difficulty telling the different between similar letters or numbers
  • Difficulty getting along with others
  • Easily frustrated
  • Can’t calm themselves down

Please contact us when your children need help in any of the above areas for an OT evaluation.  Our OT’s are also highly trained and experienced in the examination/evaluation and treatment of infants, children, and adolescents who have difficulties with:

 

  • Development of fine motor skills
  • Visual perceptual & motor skills
  • Self care skills/ play skills
  • Upper extremity strengthening & range of motion
  • Task attention & focus
  • Handwriting
  • Feeding Skills

When can my child see a pediatric therapist? April 22, 2009

The Pediatric place is open from 7:00 am – 7:00 pm Monday through Thursday and 7:00 – 6:00 pm on Friday. Weekend hours vary! Please call for more information.
